It’s all fun and games and rumors until Marvel confirms, technically, but Deadline is reporting that Zawe Ashton (Velvet Buzzsaw) has joined the cast of Captain Marvel 2 in the role of an unspecified villain. Does this mean Carol’s days of fighting the patriarchy are over? Certainly hope not.
Ashton joins a film that has an incredibly promising lineup both in front of and behind the camera: Nia DaCosta (Candyman) is directing from a script by Megan McDonnell (a story editor on WandaVision). Monica Rambeau (Teyohnah Parris) and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) both feature in the film. So far, there’s been no mention of whether Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), Monica’s mom and Carol’s best friend, will return, though it seems unlikely.
Ashton most recently appeared in the art-world satire Velvet Buzzsaw with Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo. She might be more familiar to SFF fans from her Doctor Who appearance: She played Journey Blue in the episode “Into the Dalek.” And she’s already spent some time with at least two fellow MCU actors, co-starring with Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Cox in the Broadway revival of Betrayal.
There’s no word yet on when Captain Marvel 2 will begin filming, let alone when it’ll be released, though pre-production has begun. How will it fit in with the rest of the MCU’s Phase 4? Will it get multiversal? Will Goose be in it?
This last question is, obviously, the most important.
